I’ve been having a bit of a passionate affair with mitred squares for the last little while. The “aha!” moment for me (which is probably painfully obvious!) was the realisation that they can really just be treated like crocheted granny squares to construct garments in simple – or slightly more complex – ways. The first mitred square garment I completed was inspired by a granny square cardigan video I saw online. I took a screenshot for reference and see now that it was from craftrly.com
I had begun what I thought was going to be a blanket many, many moons ago and, as is my rather “ooh, look at the pretty fish!” wont, put it down in favour of something more exciting / faster / heck, just new. I always have at least 10 projects on the go, after all. It’s not that I get bored easily, just that I have flashes of inspiration for new projects and they carry me away. For a moment or two… So I had squares on the brain, and this little reel connected the dots (or squares) in my brain.
I grabbed a couple of DPNs and some Sirdar Jewelspun aran for some beautiful colour changes, and this one was born:
Before you ask, no. This wasn’t the blanket I had begun. That sat a while longer, waiting for me to rediscover it and redesign its future…
But the next one to make an appearance was this:
You can see from the short rows at the throat before the rib that I needed some shaping there, so it didn’t ride up to my chin. It was a fun project.
Wait. I haven’t finished! Next up was a poncho:
and that was swiftly followed by a (much demanded!) mini version complete with fluffy neckline:
She’s a very happy little person to have one to match Mama’s.
But, my friends, the piece de resistance is that ‘blanket’.
Drumroll please!
251 squares of Drops Nord yarn (4ply) on a 3mm needle.
Buttonband, cuffs, hems and 500+ ends to sew in.
300 hours approx work.
And I bloody love it.
Of course, at minimum wage, it’s ‘worth’ well in excess of £3500.
Good job I’m keeping it. Oh yes. It’s mine!
