My very first adult jumper!

On my travels around the interweb, I discovered the challengingly entitled Three Movies Sweater, written in Swedish and English. I loved the style, and the premise, so I took the bait and ordered the wool. Drops Eskimo, for the uninitiated, is a chunky (9mm needle) 100% wool for a very reasonable Β£1.70 for 50g. This pattern took around 12 x 50g balls to make.

Although I was thrilled by the outcome, especially for a first-timer, my jumper came out considerably smaller than the one in the blog, unless she’s teeny, and I bigger than I thought πŸ˜‰

Also, I found there were a few omissions / confusing points in the pattern where I just had to wing it.

In short, I’ve ordered the wool for my next one and it’ll be better!

One thing I was REALLY pleased with, though, was a bit of an innovation – a risk that paid off. The ribbing at the bottom was too narrow for me, and curled up a lot. I searched the Net for tips on how to pick up and continue in rib, but found none. So I winged it again, and it worked. The join is visible, but not unsightly, and I have a new knitting fix in my arsenal πŸ™‚ I tried to photograph it, as you will see below.

So… A picture story of its creation:

  1. Hello i β€˜ m triing to do the three movies sweater too but i doΕ„ t understand How to increase for the sleeves: ” extend every other row ΓΉntil 45 sets on needle”: it s m’y first sweater with the magic loop and i m in despear! ( sorry for my english .. I m french!

    1. Hi. Don’t worry, I understand perfectly πŸ™‚ It means increase one stitch every second row until you have 45 stitches on the needle. Does this help? Good luck!

      1. Thanks for your answer.
        It helps…a little more!
Tell me if I’m right then:
I need to kneet 28 rows to get 45 stitches (31 stitches that I had on the first place + 1 more every second row) Is that right?
Do I have to increase the stitch on every row at the same place , at the beginning of the row? Is it always on the first stitch or is it some other way?
        I’m a bit confused !
        Thanks a lot again!

        1. That sounds perfect. I can’t remember where I made the stitch increases on mine – I’ll have a look and get back to you. But I think making the increase in the same place each time will make for a neater and more uniform-looking sleeve πŸ™‚

    1. Well done! πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘ Since this was my first sweater, I think I probably decreased every row, but if I were doing it again, I would make it every second row.

  2. Finish! thanks for your help ; ) for the decrease i make it every second row but… at least too many stitches left for the neck in regard of the model! I keeped it like that and the result is nevertheless very nice: a neck more flared! thanks a lot !

    1. Sonia, you are so welcome! 😊 If you feel like sharing a picture of it, I’d love to see! I have a Facebook page: Alice in Knittingland. Post it for me?

  3. Hi Alice, I, too, have been knitting this sweater and encountered the same fit issue. I think there should have been a needle size conversion from Scandinavian to US. IT
t says to use a 9 which is a US 13. So now I have to decide if I want to frog this one or start again fresh. The
Is would also explain your European commenter’s sizing success.

      1. It baffles me, Cheryl! I followed the instructions to the letter! But I do love my sweater. I think I may try at a later date to add some stitches, or maybe a chunkier yarn on bigger needles, because I’d love a big slouchy one as she wears. πŸ™‚

  4. Alice,

I just started knitting this jumper. I want it to be big and oversized. Any suggestions on how many extra stitches to add to make it this way? I was thinking of adding an extra 20. So started with 120 stitches. I am normally a medium, but want this cozy, oversized look. Yours came out so great!

    1. Hi Abaigael, Thanks so much for your comment. Yes, I think that’s very sensible. I’m a medium too, and I wanted it oversized but the pattern didn’t make it that way for me, so an extra 20 should be perfect πŸ™‚ Let me know how you get on if you have the time? πŸ™‚

  5. Hi Alice!

I’ve begun knitting this sweater also, and I’ve found your post super helpful! (especially the comments about the sizing as I too am a M normally haha, so I’m adding more stitches to mine also)

This is also my first adult sweater and my first time using circular needles properly and I’m super nervous about messing it up! I wanted to ask for some advice with the instructions about two parts:

    1) For the sleeve, the instructions say the “Knit and increase first row every five st, altogether 31 st on circular needle, knit 30 rows plain” – does this mean knit one row with 5 extra stitches every 5 knit stitches, so it changes from 26 to 31 sts in one row? And then knit 30 rows at 31 sts?

    2) When joining the sleeves to the main body (after the cast off stitches are done!) do you just literally just slide the sleeve stitches onto the main needle in the right spot and then knit on pretending they were always joined? Or is there a fancy technique I don’t know about! (should they be joined in the round like at the very beginning? Or is that not needed?)

    Thank you so much! πŸ™‚
